2011 Outlook of the U.S. and World Sugar Markets, 2010-2020 AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 2010-2020 using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to remain stable over the next ten years. Sugar prices were increased from 18.7 cents/ lb in 2009 to 27 cents/lb in 2010. World sugar production increased in 2010 along with consumption. Ending stocks did tighten in 2010. Ending stock projections by various organizations for 2011 were lower than previously estimated. World demand for sugar is expected to grow at a similar rate to world supply, resulting in Caribbean sugar prices...

2011 Updated Arkansas Global Rice Model AgEcon
Wailes, Eric J.; Chavez, Eddie C..
The Arkansas Global Rice Model is based on a multi-country statistical simulation and econometric framework. The model is disaggregated by five world regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Each region includes country models which have a supply sector, a demand sector, a trade, stocks and price linkage equations. All equations used in this model are estimated using econometric procedures or identities. Estimates are based upon a set of explanatory variables including exogenous macroeconomic factors such as income, population, inflation rate, technology development, and especially, government determined policy variables which reflect the various mechanisms by which countries intervene in their rice sector economy. Individual country...

A 2004 Social Accounting Matrix for Israel: Documentation of an Economy-Wide Database with a Focus on Agriculture, the Labour Market, and Income Distribution AgEcon
Siddig, Khalid H.A.; Flaig, Dorothee; Luckmann, Jonas; Grethe, Harald.
This document describes the Israeli Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for the year 2004, developed by the Agricultural and Food Policy Group at the University of Hohenheim. The SAM is a part of a larger research project which aims to analyse several economic, trade, and labour policies in the context of economic integration of agriculture between Israel and the West Bank. Data are obtained from various sources in Israel. Sources include the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (ICBS), the Central Bank of Israel (CBI), and the Israeli Tax Authority (ITA). Data from sources outside of Israel are used to fill-in some gaps in the domestic reports. External sources include the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and...

A 2020 VISION FOR FOOD, AGRICULTURE, AND THE ENVIRONMENT IN LATIN AMERICA AgEcon
Garrett, James L..
This paper synthesizes the strategies put forth at a 2020 workshop on Latin America held in Cali, Colombia, in March 1995, which looked at ways to eradicate extreme poverty, hunger, and malnutrition by 2020; to distribute income more equitably; and to protect natural resources and the environment. The workshop participants concluded that today's freer economic environment and reduced barriers to trade will help Latin America to achieve this vision, provided the region makes full use of its resources and promotes social objectives. A strong food and agricultural system is essential to reach these goals.

A ABERTURA COMERCIAL E O SETOR LÁCTEO BRASILEIRO: ALGUMAS REFLEXÕES AgEcon
Cruz, Jose Claudio Freitas; Crispim, Joao Paulo Carvalho.

A BALATON VÍZGYŰJTŐJÉN FOLYÓ MEZŐGAZADSÁGI TERMELÉS HATÁSA A TÓ KÖRNYEZETI ÁLLAPOTÁRA AgEcon
Marton, Istvan.
A Balaton vízminőségének, a tó állapotának romlása több tényezőre visszave-zethető, hosszú folyamat eredménye. A 80-as évek elején a feladatok meghatározásakor a tó vizének tápanyag feldúsulásáért a me-zőgazdaságot kiáltották ki fő felelősnek. Ugyanakkor szakértői vizsgálatok egy-értelműen bizonyították, hogy a Balatonba kerülő hatóanyag maximum 3-5%-a lehet műtrágya eredetű, ami önmagában a vízminőség gyorsütemű romlását nem idézhette elő. Akik kizárólag a mezőgazdaságot okolták a Balaton...

A bio-economic evaluation of the American Foulbrood (AFB) control program in Western Australia AgEcon
Ghose, Ananda; Hawkins, Chris.
American foulbrood (AFB) is considered the most significant brood disease of bees in Western Australia. The Department of Agriculture of Western Australia (DAWA) provides assistance to apiarists by way of quarantine and surveillance measures under the AFB control program. A bio-economic evaluation was considered necessary by the department for setting future policy direction. As a way forward, a number of risk analysis scenarios were simulated to estimate the future prevalence rate of AFB in the absence of the present program. This epidemiological investigation was complemented by an economic evaluation which identifies the extent of benefit that flows through to direct beneficiaries. The paper provides a comprehensive bio-economic analysis and suggests...

A Bio-economic Model of a Shrimp Hatchery in the Mekong River Delta of Vietnam AgEcon
Sinh, L.X.; MacAulay, T. Gordon; Brennan, Donna C..
Shrimp culture areas and production of the Mekong Delta cover about 60 percent of the total shrimp areas and production of Vietnam. Especially, the Delta contributes about 80 percent of the total shrimp production for export. Rapid development of the shrimp industry is raising a number of serious problems that need to be solved. Shrimp seed supply (post larvae production) plays an essential role in the shrimp industry and it is one of the most important constraints to the development of the shrimp industry in the Delta. The focus of this study is aimed at obtaining an improvement in both the profit per day and post larvae production of the shrimp hatchery in the Mekong River Delta of Vietnam. A Monte Carlo simulation approach was applied to develop a...

A bioüzemanyag-gyártás nemzetközi összefüggései AgEcon
Popp, Jozsef.
A dráguló olajár „felszínre hozta” a fosszilis energiahordozók környezetbarát energiahordozókkal való kiváltásának problémáját. Az olajkészletek korlátozottsága mellett a bizonytalan kitermelés és a folyamatosan növekvő árak a bioüzemanyagok felé irányítják a politikai döntéshozók és a befektetők figyelmét. Az olajimportőr országoknak a bioüzemanyag-gyártás nyersanyagainak hazai termelése lehetővé teszi importköltségeik visszafogását, az üvegházhatást okozó gázok kibocsátásának csökkentését, valamint a mezőgazdasági termelők jövedelem-színvonalának javítását. A bioüzemanyagok elterjedése ugyanakkor enyhíti a kapacitása határán dolgozó olajfinomító ipar üzemanyag-ellátási terheit is, ami jelentős mértékben hozzájárul(t) az üzemanyagárak emelkedéséhez. Ma...

: A bioüzemanyagok adózása Magyarországon AgEcon
Palyi, Zoltan.
A biodízelnél, például a B40- ---------------------------------------------- Apparently the status of bioethanol in terms of taxation is more favourable than that of biodiesel. A bioüzemanyagok használatával járó várható földhasználati változások Magyarországon AgEcon
Vida, Adrienn; Baksa, Adrienn.
A megújítható energiaforrások szerepének növelésében katalizátorszerepet betöltő Európai Unió már a 80-as évek elején megoldást keresett a túltermelés következtében felhalmozódott szántóföldi termékek felhasználására.

A birtokpolitika közösségi jogi problémái AgEcon
Korom, Agoston.

A Blueprint for Reform of the WTO Agreement on Agriculture AgEcon
Zahrnt, Valentin.
As the Doha negotiations are at a dead end, this paper takes a step back to address the future direction of WTO disciplines in agriculture. It puts members’ negotiating positions and the draft modalities with their ever growing list of exceptions aside to focus on three fundamental questions. First, which agricultural policy instruments should be permitted or prohibited by WTO disciplines so as to best account for the manifold effects of agriculture on societies’ welfare? Second, how should inefficient agricultural policies be treated as long as their removal is politically infeasible? And third, how can the WTO facilitate agricultural policy reform beyond establishing maximum thresholds for distorting policies? The paper argues for moving from the current...

A Brief Summary of U.S. Farm Program Provisions AgEcon
Richardson, James W.; Anderson, David P.; Outlaw, Joe L..
This brief publication began as a need for a short summary of farm programs and farm bills for two agricultural economics courses focusing on agricultural policy -- ag. economics 429, and ag. economics 614. It became clear that many students taking these courses had less and less background in agriculture and less (even cursory) knowledge of policies than those of the recent past. After this list was developed a number of other professional agricultural economists found copies and began to use it, hence its publication in a more structured form. The list of Farm Program Provisions is not all-inclusive. It certainly does not contain all the laws and provisions that have affected agriculture over the years. However, it is an easy reference to farm bills and...

A Case Study of Regulation in Zambia’s Cotton Sector. AgEcon
Tschirley, David L.; Kabwe, Stephen.
Cotton is an unquestioned success of Zambia’s turn towards a market economy. After privatization in late 1994, seed cotton production rose from 32,000 metric tons (mt) to about 180,000 mt a decade later (three-year averages centered on 1994 and 2005). The number of farmers involved in the sector grew similarly, yields trended upwards (though slowly), and the country dramatically improved the quality of its lint, becoming the outstanding performer in Sub-Saharan Africa in this regard by the mid-2000s. Yet the sector has experienced two serious crashes since reform, both involving rampant credit default by farmers supported with seasonal input credit by ginning companies.

A Censored Demand System Analysis of Fruits and Vegetables by Different Income Groups Using Micro Data AgEcon
Niu, Luyuan; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
This study examines demand for fruits and vegetables segmented by income levels in a complete demand system framework using the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) from 2002 to 2006. Results show that disparities are found between high-income households and low-income households. Seasonal effects and demographic variables, such as household heads’ race and gender, region, household size and household composition, play an important role in fruit and vegetable consumption for both categories of household. In contrast, urban status, household heads’ educational level and age are not found to have a statistically significant impact for low-income households. Conditional price elasticities indicate that processed fruits and vegetables, fresh fruits and fresh...
